Iririki Island Resort & Spa is seeking suitable candidate to fill in the role of a qualify Ferry Boat Driver

Reporting to the Resort Manager, you will operate the Ferry Boat, transporting passengers and cargo on a set path between the mainland and Iririki Island. Be able to maintain a schedule, oversee loading and unloading procedures on the boat.
Duties will include but not necessarily limited to the following:
• Piloting vessels (ferry / barge) from Iririki Island Resort to Port Vila mainland dock and back.
• Piloting sunset or other cruises around the harbour as required
• Piloting Iririki Ferryboats daily while providing an interactive "spiel" to guests and positively engaging and interacting with the guests, while maintaining expected guest safety and service levels.  
• Loading and unloading guests and belongings, while maintaining appropriate passenger levels.
• Cleaning Ferry & other Boats and facilities, Inspecting Ferry for service issues and reporting to appropriate contact, daily.
• Check fuel, water, oil and mechanical condition before leaving to transport guests.
• Assure that emergency procedures are followed in the case of an accident; complete written accident report as required and call/notify the Manager as soon as possible.
• Repair, secure and/or immediately report any and all safety hazards on the boats or jetty areas.
• Tell the Manager of the need for routine and preventative maintenance for all boats and/or engines.
• Know and follow all company, Environmental, Marine, Health and Safety, Emergency Action Plan and Risk Management Program policies and procedures.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Chief Mate, also known as the First Officer or Second Captain, is the highest-ranking officer after the Captain. This role encompasses significant responsibilities in ensuring the overall management of deck operations, safety protocols, cargo handling, and crew supervision. The Chief Mate must ensure that the vessel complies with all applicable international, national, and company regulations. This position also plays a pivotal role in the navigation of the vessel, standing watch, and ensuring that the vessel's course is maintained according to the Captain's instructions. The Chief Mate oversees the safety and performance of the crew, ensuring that all activities related to the maintenance, security, and functionality of the ship are conducted efficiently. Additionally, the Chief Mate is directly involved in deck maintenance and actively participates in cargo operations, ensuring that all loading and unloading tasks are carried out safely and according to procedure. This position requires the Chief Mate to coordinate the work of other officers and crew, especially in the handling of cargo, as well as in the maintenance and upkeep of deck machinery and safety systems. Leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to make quick decisions in critical situations are paramount for success in this role.

HYERARCHY
• Report to the Master on a daily basis

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Captain in all navigational duties and assume command in the Captain's absence.
- Oversee and manage all deck operations, including maintenance, safety inspections, and crew assignments.
- Actively participate in deck maintenance and ensure that all deck machinery and equipment are in good working condition.
- Supervise and actively participate in the loading, unloading, stowage, and securing of cargo, ensuring the stability of the vessel is maintained.
- Conduct safety drills and training for the crew, including firefighting, emergency evacuation, and lifeboat drills.
- Perform regular inspections of the vessel's hull, decks, and equipment to ensure readiness and compliance.
- Stand navigation watch as directed by the Captain and monitor all activities during the watch.
- Act as the safety officer on board, ensuring that all safety protocols and preventive measures are adhered to by the crew.
- Communicate effectively with the engine department and other officers to ensure smooth operational coordination.

GENERAL DUTIES
- The Chief Mate must be prepared to undertake any additional tasks as assigned by the Captain or the ship's management.

HYERARCHY
• Report to Technical Manager
• Report to Master on daily basis

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1.       Management and Maintenance of Mechanical Systems:
- Oversee all mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems on the ship, including engines, generator (if fitted), propulsion systems, auxiliary equipment, and cooling systems.
- Ensure preventive and corrective maintenance of mechanical equipment to guaranty proper functioning and to minimize unexpected downtime.
- Plan and coordinate regular maintenance operations following manufacturer's guidelines and maritime regulations.

2. Team and Safety Management:
- Ensure jobs are conducted safely and according to the company Management System.
- Request necessary support to Technical Manager

3. Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
- Analyse breakdowns and technical issues occurring in mechanical systems by using necessary diagnostic tools and conducting thorough testing.
- Develop effective troubleshooting strategies to minimize disruptions and swiftly restore normal operations.

4. Reporting and Communication:
- Prepare detailed reports on maintenance operations, completed repairs, encountered issues, and preventive measures taken.
- Maintain regular and transparent communication with the ship's Captain and other members of the leadership team, to ensure coordination and synchronization of activities on board.
- Each trip report to the Technical Manager
- Review Ship fuel consumption and Plan for refuelling.
- Plan and request necessary spare parts and consumables.

5. Conducting Watch at Sea:
- Assume responsibility for conducting watch at sea, overseeing the safe operation of the ship's mechanical systems during day shifts.
- Monitor equipment performance, respond to alarms or abnormalities, and make necessary adjustments to maintain the ship's course, speed, and overall functionality.
- Properly fill in the parameters in the Engine Log Book
- Collaborate and report to the navigation team to ensure seamless communication and coordination.

 

Selection Criteria:

Mechanic embedded machine system advanced skills
In-depth knowledge of on-board mechanical systems and troubleshooting
Engineer 300 KW License
Minimum of 2 years of experience in the position
Advanced courses
