Job Desctiption:

The Dock Operations Manager is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and supervising all dockside operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely handling of cargo, parcels, containers, and other shipments.
The position plays a key role in coordinating activities between the dock team, vessel operations, and the Sales and Commercial teams, ensuring that all cargo is properly prepared, handled, loaded, unloaded, and dispatched according to operational requirements and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities
1. Dock Operations
• Organize and supervise day-to-day dock operations.
• Coordinate the preparation and movement of cargo, parcels, and containers.
• Ensure that all cargo is properly received, identified, sorted, and positioned for loading or delivery.
• Plan and coordinate loading and unloading operations in line with vessel schedules and operational requirements.
• Ensure efficient use of available dock space and equipment.
• Monitor the movement of cargo to minimize delays and operational disruptions.

2. Cargo, Parcel and Container Management
• Organize parcels, cargo, and containers according to their destination and vessel allocation.
• Verify cargo against relevant documentation and loading lists.
• Ensure that cargo is correctly labeled, secured, and ready for shipment.
• Coordinate the handling of oversized, heavy, or special cargo with the relevant teams.
• Report any discrepancies, damages, or operational issues promptly.

3. Team Supervision
• Supervise and coordinate dock staff and casual workers.
• Allocate daily tasks and ensure that team members understand their responsibilities.
• Monitor staff performance and ensure that operational procedures are followed.
• Provide guidance and support to dock staff to maintain a high level of productivity and service.
• Ensure that staff work efficiently and cooperatively as a team.

4. Safety and Compliance
• Ensure that all dock operations are carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures.
• Enforce health and safety rules and ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Identify and report potential safety hazards and operational risks.
• Ensure that cargo is handled, loaded, and secured safely.
• Immediately report accidents, incidents, or damage to management.

5. Coordination with Sales and Commercial Teams
• Coordinate closely with the Sales and Commercial teams regarding cargo bookings and customer requirements.
• Confirm cargo availability, dimensions, weight, and loading requirements.
• Ensure that the dock team is informed of all confirmed cargo bookings and special handling requirements.
• Provide regular updates regarding cargo status, loading progress, and operational constraints.
• Communicate any capacity issues, delays, or changes that may affect customers or scheduled shipments.

6. Vessel Operations
• Coordinate dock operations according to vessel arrival and departure schedules.
• Ensure that loading and unloading activities are completed within the allocated operational time.
• Liaise with vessel crew and relevant operational personnel as required.
• Support the efficient turnaround of vessels at the dock.
• Ensure the dock is properly organized and ready before vessel arrival.

7. Reporting and Administration
• Maintain accurate records of cargo received, loaded, unloaded, and dispatched.
• Report operational performance, incidents, delays, and discrepancies to management.
• Assist with daily operational planning and reporting.
• Ensure that all required operational documents are properly completed and filed.

The Dock Operations Manager will work closely with Operations Management, the Sales and Commercial Teams, Cargo and Parcel Teams, Dock Staff and casual workers, Vessel crews, customers and freight forwarders, as well as other relevant operational and administrative departments.

Selection Criteria:

• Strong organizational and coordination skills.
• Previous experience in dock, port, shipping, logistics, or warehouse operations.
• Proven experience supervising, leading, and managing operational teams.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, guide, and support team members.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating daily operations and ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely.
• Ability to work under pressure and effectively manage multiple priorities and operational demands.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, vessel crew, customers, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate operational records and documentation.
• Ability to identify and resolve operational issues quickly, effectively, and professionally.
• Good understanding of workplace health and safety requirements and the ability to promote a safe working environment.
• Ability to make sound operational decisions and take appropriate action when unexpected situations arise.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays when required by vessel schedules.
• Physically fit and comfortable working in an outdoor, hands-on, and operational environment.


Performance in this role will be measured against:
• Safe and efficient dock operations.
• Timely completion of loading and unloading activities.
• Accurate handling and organization of cargo and parcels.
• Minimal cargo damage, loss, or discrepancies.
• Effective supervision and productivity of dock staff.
• Compliance with safety and operational procedures.
• Effective coordination with Sales, Commercial, and Vessel Operations teams.
• Customer service and operational responsiveness.

The Dock Operations Manager is expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, leadership, and a strong commitment to operational excellence. The position holder must ensure that all activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies and procedures.
The employee may be required to perform other duties reasonably related to the position as directed by management.
