Job Description:
The Vanuatu Education Support Program (VESP) is supporting the Government of Vanuatu’s goals of improving education quality, providing more equitable access to education and ensuring a well-managed education system. The program is currently focused on improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for children in the early years of primary education. VESP is supported by donor partners under a Joint Partnership Arrangement between the Governments of Vanuatu, Australia and New Zealand.

Role:
The Specialist will provide technical input and support to colleagues within the Ministry of Education and Training and will focus on the development of a language transition guide for teachers of Year 1 -3 that provides ideas for introducing both English and French as an additional language when the children’s first language is being used as the medium of instruction. 
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Developing a Language Transition Guide Years 1-3: one in French and one in English for teachers
  • Developing a progress map for student achievement in French and English as an additional language that is relevant to the Vanuatu context.
Do you have strong knowledge of teaching and learning strategies for transitioning from mother tongue to additional languages in early years education?


Criteria:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Demonstrate experience in the implementation of second language continuum for teachers
  • Ideally, have proficiency and a strong understanding of teaching both English and French as additional languages although strong candidates with one of these languages will also be considered 
  • A strong knowledge of mother tongue and multilingual education principles is essential
  • Previous experience working in the Pacific or other developing country context is required
  • Proficiency in Bislama is highly desirable.
