Background and Country context:
ActionAid has been working in Vanuatu in partnership with the Department of Women's Affairs since Cyclone Pam devastated the island in 2015. The primary focus was implementing a women-led community-based protection program to respond to women's protection needs in Vanuatu.  The initial priority was to set up Women Information Centres; each which acted as a safe space where women could share their issues and experiences in the aftermath of Cyclone Pam and as a foundation to facilitate women's access to information in regards to services and support available during the disaster response period. The past five years has seen these spaces evolve into forums called Women I TokTok Tugeta (WITTT), which enables women to engage in their political systems and influence change directly. WITTT forums have created spaces for women to learn about women's rights in emergencies, disaster risk reduction, protection , climate change and how it affects them directly. The forums also support the development of the women's communication mechanisms to amplify their voices in calling for greater action by the government and the humanitarian sector to address women's priorities in response to climate change and disasters.

ActionAid's Unique Response
ActionAid Australia is a women's rights organisation working to empower women to collectively claim their rights and fight against inequality; ActionAid Vanuatu is the Pacific program arm working (and registered) in Vanuatu to implement the WITTT forums. As a member of the wider ActionAid Federation, programs are being implemented across 45 countries, working to achieve economic and climate justice for women, as well as securing and protecting women's rights in emergency situations.
