Purpose of the Society
Founded in 1982, Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) is a major stakeholder in the humanitarian system. The Society is recognized by the Government as auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field in accordance with the provisions of the First Geneva Convention. The organization is also one member of the National Disaster Committee.
VRCS has identified Disaster Management and Disaster Preparedness as one of its main areas of intervention with a particular focus on community based disaster preparedness. It also implements a Health Program, whose main     components are First Aid, Hygiene Promotion, MHM and health Emergency interventions. The organization also encourages Youth participation and promotes the International Humanitarian Law.
VRCS has branches in 6 different provinces and numerous sub-branches. It can also rely on a solid network of trained volunteers all over the country. Around 24 staff members are currently working at HQ in Efate, while around 10 are working in the other islands.

 

Job Desctiption:

Purpose of the job:
To lead and manage the Health, WaSH & First aid department in order to provide health and WASH support to vulnerable people/communities & provide first aid training to commercial, community and internal VRCS clients.   The incumbent will liaise with government authorities and other NGOs as required in order to progress agreed health outcomes.
The Coordinator will also manage the development of the commercial first aid program, work with Red Cross project managers to incorporate first aid training into community programs and lead the training of community based first aid trainers. They will be responsible for ensuring regular first aid, health, gender protection and hygiene trainings for Vanuatu Red Cross staff, board members and volunteers. The Health WaSH coordinator is also tasked as acting as Health Technical support to branches, staff and volunteers with the health, first aid and WaSH related programs, projects and interventions. The health Coordinator will work closely with the DM team to support and lead health, Wash and Protection interventions in emergency response.

 

Selection Criteria:

Qualifications and profile required

• Tertiary qualification in health & or humanitarian fields
• Ability to manage multiple and sometimes rapidly changing priorities
• Well organised
• Able to work well under pressure for extended periods
• Able to work both as part of a team and with minimal supervision
• Integrity
• Current driver's licence with clean driving record is preferred
• Willing to travel as required (estimate 25% of time)

Knowledge & skills required

• Strong health, WASH & first aid experience
• Experience in project management, including managing budgets
• Previous staff management experience
• Exceptional interpersonal skills
• Strong problem solving skills
• Knowledge of the Vanuatu context
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Bislama (French would be advantageous)
• Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, with Publisher and MS Project an advantage)
• Knowledge of the Red Cross movement will be an asset
