1. Background
The Vanuatu National Power and Water Authority Limited (VAN-PAWA LTD) is a Utility Company, 100% owned by The Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNPF) which is the current concessionaire responsible for the Generation and Distribution of electricity in Tanna and Malekula and committed to providing our customers with reliable, quality and sustainable service.
VAN-PAWA LTD is inviting sealed applications for the position of Mechanic/Operator to join the VAN-PAWA team. The Mechanic/Operator will be based on Tanna working with the VAN-PAWA Southern Division team to support reliable power generation and improve operational efficiency under the direction of the Chief Mechanic. The incumbent will assist the Chief Mechanic in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of power generation plants and related plant equipment and machinery, including routine inspections, corrective maintenance, basic operational control, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures.

2. Job Description
2.1. The Mechanic/operator will perform the following duties:
2.1.1. Operations Support (Mechanic/Operator Duties)
2.1.1.1. Assist with daily start-up, shut-down, and basic monitoring of generation equipment and machinery as directed.
2.1.1.2. Support the Chief Mechanic in monitoring key operational indicators (engine/generator performance, oil pressure, temperature, fuel level, alarms, output stability).
2.1.1.3. Maintain shift/plant logs and report abnormal conditions promptly.
2.1.1.4. Ensure correct use of operating manuals, SOPs, and manufacturer instructions.
2.1.1.5. Support coordination of planned shutdowns and maintenance windows.
2.1.2. Preventive and Corrective Maintenance
2.1.2.1. Carry out or assist with preventive maintenance tasks on generators, engines, alternators, pumps, and auxiliary systems.
2.1.2.2. Diagnose and assist with troubleshooting mechanical and minor electrical/controls issues (within scope and competence).
2.1.2.3. Perform repairs such as replacing worn parts, seals, filters, belts, hoses, and lubricating components as required.
2.1.2.4. Assist in overhaul preparation, spares replacement, and post-repair testing under supervision/approval.
2.1.2.5. Ensure all maintenance activities are recorded accurately (work orders, findings, repairs done, parts used, time taken).
2.1.3. Safety, Compliance, and quality
2.1.3.1. Follow all workplace health and safety procedures, including PPE requirements, lockout/tagout practices, and safe working procedures.
2.1.3.2. Support safe fuel handling, spill prevention, and waste management procedures.
2.1.3.3. Ensure tools, equipment, and lifting gear are used correctly and stored safely.
2.1.3.4. Report hazards, near-misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.
2.1.3.5. Help ensure compliance with VAN-PAWA maintenance standards and any regulatory requirements applicable to utility operations.
2.1.4. Spares, Tools, and Materials Control (Supporting Role)
2.1.4.1. Assist in maintaining an orderly stores/parts usage process for assigned equipment.
2.1.4.2. Record parts consumption and report low stock or obsolete items to the Chief Mechanic.
2.1.4.3. Conduct basic tool accountability and ensure tools are maintained (clean, calibrated where needed, serviceable).
2.1.4.4. Support receiving, labeling, and safeguarding of materials/spares in line with procedure.
2.1.5. Coordination and Communication
2.1.5.1. Maintain clear communication with the Chief Mechanic during shifts and maintenance activities.
2.1.5.2. Provide technical support to operators/technicians as instructed.
2.1.5.3. Escalate issues that require specialist assistance (engine makers’ representatives, electrical engineers, control systems specialists).
2.1.5.4. Participate in training, toolbox talks, and continuous improvement activities.
Must be able to independently perform the above duties during absence of chief Mechanic.
Selection Criteria:
3. Qualifications and Experience
3.1. Relevant qualifications in mechanical engineering, diesel mechanics, plant mechanics, or electrical/mechanical trade (or equivalent experience).
3.2. Demonstrated experience in maintaining and operating diesel generator sets and associated plant equipment.
3.3. Ability to read basic technical documents (manuals, checklists, simple diagrams).
3.4. Experience working in utility, industrial, or power-generation environments is an advantage.
3.5. Must be able to work in remote/island conditions and follow strict safety practices
4. Competencies and skills
4.1. Basic operation/monitoring of generator sets and auxiliaries.
4.2. Preventive maintenance planning and execution (filters, lubrication, cooling/fuel systems, belts/hoses, routine checks).
4.3. Familiarity with mechanical troubleshooting methods (symptom identification, inspection, basic measurements).
4.4. Ability to use standard tools and maintain them properly.
4.5. Ability to interpret readings from equipment monitoring systems and identify abnormalities through sound or smell that may indicate a mechanical malfunction.
4.6. Basic understanding of safety and risk management for rotating equipment, fuel systems, and hot surfaces.
4.7. Ability to keep accurate logbooks and maintenance records, produce reports in MS word and MS excel.
4.8. Ability to monitor readings on ComAp and Deep-Sea controller and/or willing to learn
4.9. Reliability and punctuality for shift and maintenance schedules.

5. Reporting Line
The Mechanic/operator will report to the Chief Mechanic Southern Division.
