ActionAid Vanuatu is a Vanuatu-based, development, humanitarian, and climate focused organisation. We
work with Women I Tok Tok Tugeta (WITTT) - a network of diverse Ni-Vanuatu women - to support their
leadership and collective action to claim their rights.

 

Job Desctiption:

MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Communications Officer is a member of the ActionAid Vanuatu (AAV) team and will report directly to the Country Program Manager. The Communications Officer is responsible for capturing, producing, and disseminating high-quality communications content that reflects the impact of AAV’s programs, particularly the Women I Tok Tok Tugeta (WITTT) program and other activities focused on women’s rights, gender-based violence prevention, climate resilience, humanitarian response, and community protection.

This role plays a critical function in ensuring AAV’s work is visible to donors, partners, and the public, and that program stories, evidence, and learning are documented and shared effectively. The Communications Officer will work closely with program staff in Vanuatu and collaborate with the ActionAid Australia (AAA) communications team to ensure consistency with organizational branding, messaging, and donor acknowledgement obligations.
KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities Tasks/Duties
Content Capture and Storytelling • Capture impactful stories, case studies, and testimonials from project activities, particularly from WITTT women.
• Support the development of communications and visibility plans for all ActionAid Vanuatu projects, as well as the overall country program.
• Attend field activities, community events, and partner meetings to gather first-hand content including photos, quotes, and narrative material.
• Develop written stories and profiles of program participants (with informed consent) that reflect ActionAid’s feminist and human rights-based approach.
• Upload all content to ActionAid International’s internal platform Stories Hub and contribute to maintaining an organised digital archive of photos, videos, and written content.
• Support production of regular program updates, including newsletters, field updates, and feature stories for internal and external audiences.
• Engaging with mainstream media using them to provide spaces/platforms for advocacy, show casing AAV ‘s work and communicating programs and impact
Social Media Management and Mainstream Media Support • Manage and regularly update ActionAid Vanuatu’s social media channels (Facebook and others as relevant), ensuring content is timely, engaging, and aligned with AAV’s messaging and branding guidelines.
• Develop and maintain a social media content calendar in coordination with the Country Program Manager and AAA communications team.
• Adapt program content for social media audiences, ensuring accessibility and relevance for local Vanuatu communities as well as broader audiences.
• Ensure all social media posts adhere to donor visibility and acknowledgement requirements (see below).
• Identify and link AAV with mainstream media for visibility and advocacy.

Donor Acknowledgement and Visibility • Ensure all public-facing content, including social media posts, reports, photos, and events, properly acknowledges relevant donors in line with AAV, AAA, and donor guidelines.
• Maintain working knowledge of donor visibility requirements across active projects (e.g. DFAT, UN Women, Kiwa Initiative and other funders) and apply these consistently in communications outputs.
• Support production of project signage, banners, and branded materials that meet donor acknowledgement standards.
• Liaise with AAA’s communications team to ensure compliance with ActionAid branding and visibility policies.
Impact, Learning, and Reporting Documents • Contribute to the development of impact and learning documents, including annual reports, donor reports, case studies, and end-of-project documentation.
• Support collation of qualitative evidence and program data for inclusion in donor reports and MEL products.
• Assist in the design and layout of communications materials (e.g. one-pagers, infographics, learning briefs).
• Contribute to documentation of lessons learned and good practices from WITTT and other AAV program activities.
• Support translation and localisation of communications content between English and Bislama as required.
Other Responsibilities • Adhere to ActionAid’s feminist values and Team Charter.
• Participate in relevant AAV and AAA team activities, meetings, and planning processes.
• Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture that is inclusive and feminist in practice.
• Support compliance requirements including child protection, safeguarding, data protection, and informed consent protocols in all communications work.
• Undertake other duties as reasonably requested.


 

Selection Criteria:

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Essential
• Demonstrated experience in content creation, storytelling, or communications in an NGO, media, or development sector context.
• Strong written communication skills in English, with the ability to write for diverse audiences including donors, communities, and the public.
• Professional fluency in Bislama and English (written and spoken).
• Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms (particularly Facebook) for an organisation or program.
• Photography skills and experience, with an eye for capturing engaging, ethical imagery of program participants and activities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and design tools such as Canva.
• Understanding of ethical communications principles, including informed consent, dignity, and safeguarding in relation to program participants.
• Have knowledge of Vanuatu Media houses and structures.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a small team environment.
• Commitment to gender equality, women’s rights, and ActionAid’s feminist principles.

Desirable
• Experience working with international NGOs or donor-funded development programs.
• Familiarity with donor visibility and acknowledgement requirements (e.g. DFAT, UN Women).
• Experience in video production and/or audio recording for documentary or digital content purposes.
• Understanding of gender-based violence programs and trauma-informed communication approaches.
• Experience working with rural and remote communities in Vanuatu.
