Increasing Resilience to Climate Change and Natural Hazards Project Job Description: The Vanuatu Meteorological and Geo-hazard Department (VGMD) and National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) have secured funding for a large-scale national adaptation and disaster risk reduction project designed to address Vanuatu’s immediate climate change adaptation needs and mitigate natural disaster risks. The Provincial Disaster Officer will work as a part of NDMO to implement strategies in ensuring Vanuatu is better prepared and more able to respond to Natural Hazards. The Provincial Disaster Officer will be contracted initially for 1 year and be based within the provincial center in Tanna, reporting to the NDMO office in Port Vila.

Criteria: 

The successful applicant will have:

Required qualifications:

• Diploma, Degree or relevant tertiary qualification in Disaster or Public Administration, Climate Change, Environmental Studies or related field or equivalent work experience
• Proficient in written and spoken English and Bislama, French an advantage
• At least 1 year experience working in emergency, disaster, climate change, community development or related field within Vanuatu
• Willing to travel regularly
• Driver’s license is essential
• Self-motivated and able to use initiative
• Computer literate with a strong command of Microsoft suites.

Desirable

• Experience with Vanuatu Government procedures
• Previous work experience with projects
• Experience in delivering training and awareness programs and activities
• Strong leadership skills
• Project Proposal/ development experience.
